The Spearfish is a very rare Fish to see. There are many people that confuse this elegant creature for the white marlin. They are however different Fish with similar but different traits. Seeing these elegant Fish is a real treat for anyone.
The Spearfish is a smaller species of Fish, with the record for weight being 61 pounds, which is smaller even than the sailfish. It is characterized by blue and silver colorings, which is part of the reason it is often confused for a marlin. This Fish also has a blue dorsal fin and a pointed upper jaw, which is very much like a marlin as well. The major difference is that the Spearfish is a lot smaller than the marlin is.
These Fish have two dorsal fins, two anal fins and even ventral fins as well. These are all characteristics of Fish in the billfish family, though the dorsal fin is shorter than most of the other Fish in this family. Spearfish tend to only live for four to five years, which means that they mature at about two years of age.
Found only off shore in very deep waters, the rare Spearfish feeds at the surface or just below the surface of the water. Their diet is mostly squid and other smaller Fish. Usually when one of these fish is caught, they are found near the Gulf Stream. They have also been found in the Bahama and even the Carribean islands as well.
The Spearfish is known to eat mostly fish and squid. They tend to feast at the surface of the water. These beautiful Fish are prey to sharks and other larger fish as well, including the blue marlin. However, it is the least known member of the billfish family and therefore makes it hard to be able to know a great deal about these Fish.
Even though the Spearfish are not a target for fishing and are more often caught by a person confusing them for the marlin, they are still protected within 200 miles of the U.S. coast. Commercial boats are not allowed to keep these Fish. Individuals are only allowed to catch them when they have a permit to do so.
This video shows you rare footage of the Spearfish. This is a great way to see the way this beautiful Fish swims through the water, the way it gracefully jumps in the air. A person can even see why these Fish are so often confused for other members of the billfish family as well.
